More than 1,000 mums-to-be are being recruited for a clinical trial on the use of nicotine patches during pregnancy.
The Smoking, Nicotine and Pregnancy trial will look at the safety and cost-effectiveness of nicotine replacement therapy.
It will also study the effect ton the behaviour and development of the child.
Smoking during pregnancy accounts for 4,000 foetal deaths, including miscarriages, every year, as well as premature births, cot death and asthma.
The trial, funded by the National Institute for Health Research's Health Technology Assessment Programme, is being led by Dr Tim Coleman from the Division of Primary Care at The University of Nottingham.
He said: "If the Snap trial establishes that NRT is effective and safe when used for smoking cessation by pregnant women, then greater use of NRT by pregnant smokers could have a substantial impact on their health and also on the health of their babies."
