Justice for woman fired for being pregnant

A woman who was fired just four days into a new job after she revealed she was pregnant has won £8,000 in compensation.

Tracey Lamond told the Daily Record how after she was hired as an assistant manager for the Clachan Hotel in Aberfoyle, Stirlingshire, in May last year, she was surprised but thrilled to learn she had become pregnant just four days into the job.

When she informed her new employer, she was assured that her pregnancy would not be a problem, but hotel manager Patrick Devanney sacked Tracey on 17th June after she took a day off with morning sickness.

Tracey decided to take her former boss to court over the matter, which ruled in her favour and found her boss guilty of sexual discrimination. During the hearing, the court discovered that the Mr Bates - the boss of the hotel - told Mr Devanney that one of his first duties was to "get rid of you know who", as there was no way he was paying for maternity leave.

The proud new mum was awarded her £8148, including £2000 for injury to her feelings. Tracey said that she was thrilled with the result as she had always known that she was sacked purely for becoming pregnant. Both Mr Devanney and Mr Bates have since moved on from the hotel.
