As we move into the second week of the smoking ban in enclosed public spaces across England, a leading baby and parenting expert has praised the initiative, stating that the ban will be particularly beneficial for expectant mums.
Simon Williamson, managing director at Bounty, said pregnant women can now feel more confident about going out and about without being put at risk of inhaling second-hand smoke.
He continued to say that not only would it give pregnant women the choice to enter bars, pubs and restaurants without worrying about passive smoking, it may even encourage those who are still smoking to cut down or give up altogether.
On the subject of how the ban will affect the health of mums-to-be and their babies, Mr Williamson explained that in theory, it could reduce the risk of miscarriage and premature birth.
"During pregnancy, the chemicals from cigarette smoke pass directly from the woman's blood into the baby's blood supply. This means that smokers have an increased risk of miscarriage, a baby with low birth weight, a premature birth and even a still birth.
"In 50% of still births, the known cause is never determined although smoking is a risk factor. The smoking ban may not have an immediate impact on the statistics however it should persuade more women in general to give up smoking before they become pregnant so over time we should see a reduction in smoking related pregnancy complications," he concluded.
