Kalan Porter lends voice to cancer fight

Former Canadian Idol Kalan Porter is lending his voice to the fight against breast cancer.

The 21-year-old singer is taking part in the CIBC Run for the Cure in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation on Sept. 30.

Porter, who found out in early 2006 that his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, co-wrote “Down in Heaven,” the first single from his sophomore album, as a tribute to his mother’s battle.

“Writing became very therapeutic, giving me an outlet to let out my emotions and process what happened to my family,” Porter explained, in a release.

Wake Up Living, a follow-up to Porter’s double-platinum debut CD, goes on sale Aug. 28. It was produced by Brian Malouf (Pink, Bon Jovi, Dave Matthews Band).

The season two Idol winner said his mother is doing well and plans to join him on his next tour.

Porter, who hails from Medicine Hat, Alberta, is scheduled to appear on an upcoming episode of Canadian Idol to promote the release of his new album.
