How to Cope with Pregnancy Bed Rest

Bed rest is no vacation. Activities you normally enjoy are limited. As a result, you risk the following physical, mental, and emotional effects, according to the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center's Fetal Medicine Division:

Physical Effects of Bed Rest. Reclining for long periods causes muscle cramping, stiffness, and numbness. In addition, pregnancy discomforts such as heartburn, reflux, constipation, and low back pain increase in severity. And bed rest is known to cause muscle and bone loss.

Emotional Effects of Bed Rest. Depression, anxiety, decreased self-esteem, and body image problems can result from bed rest. People on bed rest often become isolated and feel disconnected from the outside world.

Mental Effects of Bed Rest. Resting in bed for long periods of time can impair recall, verbal fluency, motor skills, and concentration.

But take heart — you can prevent and improve these effects with specific actions and with the support of your doctor, family, and friends.

Coping Physically With Bed Rest
You can take action to fight the physical effects of bed rest. Help your body stay comfortable and fit with these suggestions:

* Comfort first. Wear comfortable clothing, ensure the temperature of the room is appropriate, and keep extra blankets and pillows handy.
* Healing touch. Lying in bed can make your back and limbs feel sore and numb. Physical therapists experienced in working with women on bed rest can help you perform therapeutic motions that are safe and relieve your symptoms. Ask your doctor if physical therapy is appropriate in your case.
* Massage benefits. Discuss the benefits of massage with your doctor. If she says it's safe, schedule a regular massage in your home or hospital room to invigorate your body and soothe stiff muscles.
* Get moving. Check with your doctor to see if there are any safe exercises you can do in bed to keep your blood flowing and your limbs moving.

Get Your Skin Silky Smooth for Spring!

Most of us have the same problem this time of year: dry, dull winter skin. The colder it gets outside, the more we love to huddle in a warm living room and the more our skin dries out. And not only that, but hands get chapped in the harsh cold winter air outside. Creams and hand lotions help a little, but often not enough. This is where professional spas come in with their paraffin wax therapy treatments.

Paraffin is a pure crystalline wax that absorbs other ingredients well and is especially good at coating and sealing. It can be mixed with aromatherapy scents and other moisturizing substances. Conair, for instance, uses extracts of the desert plant aloe vera, long known for its ability to bring soothing relief to parched skin, in its professional paraffin spas available for home use. The wax exfoliates chapped surface skin, exposing soft skin underneath.

Aside from the cosmetic benefit, there is also a therapeutic benefit: heat treatments are recommended for a variety of ailments, such as arthritis, bursitis, and muscle aches and pains. The warm wax is a wonderfully soothing way to apply heat to hands, elbows, and feet. Try the Conair® salon style PB10 for hands, elbows and feet.

Here is how it works: A block of the wax is heated in a special tub. You can dip your hands, elbows, or even your feet into the warm wax mixture, then remove them and slip them into plastic liners and eventually cotton mitts. The liners and mitts hold in heat and help your skin get the full benefit of the soothing treatment. Once the wax cools, the mitts are removed, and liners and wax peel off easily. Skin is noticeably softer, silkier, smoother, ready for Spring!

Bronzer Plus Blush: A Killer Combo

Bronzer Plus Blush: A Killer Combo
Bronzer Plus Blush: A Killer Combo
No matter the season, I'm a big fan of the bronzed look (my favorite bronzer of the moment: Trish McEvoy's pressed shimmer powder). But bronzer alone can appear dull on skin. Skin looks best when dewy and hydrated. Here's a tip I learned from a makeup artist a few years ago: Apply bronzer to all the spots the sun naturally shines, then add "pop" with a hint of cream-based blush (skip the powder) on the apples of the cheeks. Right now I'm using Bobbi Brown's pot rouge for lips and cheeks (pictured left) and I'm loving it. Bronzer plus the moisturizing blush give me a dewy look that's very natural.

Extra tip: If you have fine lines and wrinkles, skip the powders and opt for cream-based foundations and blush. Powder tends to settle into fine lines and wrinkles, while creams hydrate and plump up skin.

Beauty Tip for Dark-Haired Girls

Beauty Tip for Dark-Haired Girls
Here's a beauty tip I learned from Antonio, my stylist at Eva Scrivo Salon. If you have super dark hair, but pale skin, sometimes you can see too much of the scalp through your hair, especially when hair is in an updo. Antonio camouflages this with Bumble and Bumble hair powder. A few shots of the dark spray on all the "bald spots" and you won't see the scalp anymore.

Veggie Booty Recalled Due to Salmonella

Veggie Booty Recalled Due to Salmonella
FDA Reports 52 Cases of Salmonella Illness from Eating Veggie Booty Snacks

The FDA is warning consumers not to eat Veggie Booty snack food because of possible contamination with Salmonellawandsworth, bacterium that causes gastrointestinal illness.

Veggie Booty is a snack of puffed rice and corn with a vegetable coating. Its marketer is recalling all potentially contaminated Veggie Booty, including all expiration dates and all lot codes.

The warning is based on 52 reports of illness across 17 states, beginning in March 2007. The salmonella outbreak is likely ongoing, states an FDA news release.

Almost all cases occurred in children under 10 years old, with the most cases in toddlers. Most patients had bloody diarrhea; four people were hospitalized, according to the FDA.

The FDA and CDC advise consumers to throw away any Robert’s American Gourmet brand Veggie Booty they have in their home. Veggie Booty is sold in a flexible plastic foil bag in 4-ounce, 1-ounce, and 1/2-ounce packages.
Veggie Booty and Salmonella

Veggie Booty is often eaten by children, so the FDA encourages parents to watch their children and seek medical care if they observe signs of illness.

People who have recently eaten Veggie Booty and who have experienced any possible symptoms of salmonella infection -- including abdominal cramps, fever, and diarrhea (which may be bloody) -- should contact a doctor or other health care provider immediately and report the illness to state or local health authorities, notes the FDA.

Salmonella symptoms usually begin within one to four days after exposure to the bacteria. Most people don’t develop severe illness, but salmonella can invade the bloodstream and cause life-threatening infections, especially in infants and people with health problems or weak immune systems.
Veggie Booty Recall

Veggie Booty is marketed by Robert's American Gourmet of Sea Cliff, N.Y.

The company has halted Veggie Booty's manufacturing and distribution and is recalling all potentially contaminated products, including all expiration dates and lot codes.

Veggie Booty is sold in all 50 states and Canada at retail locations and over the Internet.

There is no evidence that other products from Robert's American Gourmet have caused diarrhea or other illnesses, according to the CDC.

The CDC also notes that there is no evidence of salmonella illnesses in people who ate snack foods that aren't marketed by Robert's American Gourmet.

States reporting illnesses include California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin.

The FDA notes that Veggie Booty's maker and marketer are fully cooperating with the FDA’s investigation into the cause of the contamination.

The FDA says it learned of the illnesses on June 27 from the CDC, which investigated the illnesses with state and local health officials.
