Controversy surrounds pregnancy

An academic row has emerged following an Otago professor's suggestions for how to reduce unplanned pregnancies in less educated women. Emeritus professor Dr Jim Flynn believes if New Zealand does not act to boost birth rates in highly educated women, there is a risk of dumbing down the population.

Dr Flynn says one solution could be to put contraceptives in the water supply.

Waikato University professor of demography Ian Pool is concerned this way of thinking will feed prejudices. He says what really needs to be addressed is how it can be made easier for women to have both a career and a family.
